Kayaking General Info

Overview of The North Inlet Kayak Trip

The North Inlet Kayak trip is an incredible paddle through a spectacular eco-system. We are entering our third year and each trip has been its own adventure.

The Paddle can be fairly challenging to moderately difficult at times. Unforeseen factors and / or a change in conditions such as(but not limited to) weather, wind, tidal currents and other boat traffic may increase or decrease the level of difficulty.

Moderately difficult means:
-paddling for approximately two hours
ideally: ~one hour paddling to South Debordieu Island or North Island
~30 minute break - Beach combing
~one hour paddling back to Oyster Landing at the NI-WB NERR.

Other Things to consider:
-walking in shallow salt marsh creeks dragging a kayak.
(when it is too shallow to navigate a kayak is a possibility)

- Continuous physical activity outside in summer conditions
(heat, humidity, sun exposure, wind)

Other Hazards include (but not limited to):

-Oysters

-Sun / heat exposure

-Tidal currents

-Motorboat traffic

-Lightning

-Insect / animal bites and stings

-Atheltic injuries (i.e tendonitis)

-Drowning

Hazards will be dealt with in a proactive fashion:

-All Padllers should wear tec-sandals, Lace-up sturdy footwear,
booties, or reef shoes
(no flip flops or “Aquasocks”)

-All Paddlers should wear rash guard/ sun shirt, or a Cotton shirt, hat, sunscreen, & bring plenty of drinking water.

-Timing of trip are scheduled in favorable tides, but conditions can change at anytime at any tide.

-Instruction on group travel is provided by Surf The Earth. We cover the basics on entering and exiting the boat, efficient paddle and stroke techniques, stretching, current weather coditions, and general water safety.

Paddler should avoid alcohol the night before to reduce chances of dehydration.

Personal Floatation Device are provided and worn at all times on water.

The Kayak trip can be cancelled due to weather conditions and/or threat of weather conditions at any time.
